about

about

culturala is a sharing and collaborative publishing network. We want to provide a platform with and for a diversity of voices to be published and heard, in a language that is approachable. We aim to question the status quo of elitist, capitalist, and neoliberal structures of cultural production and the art world, and to move away from it.

Rather than being treated in an intimidating way, culturala believes arts and culture are a commons – meant to be cultivated and shared collectively. We want our writing to reflect this: we want to speak, write and read about what we feel, think, like and dislike about culture(s). We believe in critique that encourages awareness of positions of privilege, with sensitivity.

share your ideas

culturala is open to writers and contributors from all levels of experience, and all disciplines, genres, and topics – and their intersections.

Language and form is important for culturala. Away from the overly academic or intellectual, we want to write, publish and distribute texts that are understandable to a variety of readers. Visual arts, films, music, literature, culture or anything that comes to your mind that could fit to us.

We want to construct together a sustainable, accessible and inclusive network of (ir)regular contributors (writers, artists, or anyone with an imposter syndrome that doesn’t identify as neither YET) discussing issues that matter to them, promoting cultural exchange and facilitating the flow of knowledge and inspiration.

With its origin in Lisbon, which has a special place in culturala’s hearts, we especially encourage Lisbon- or Portugal related writing proposals: movie-critique, exhibition-review, (film-) festivals, artists-portraits, or anything else that excited you or made you think.

how?

With a community-centered approach, collaboration is one of our highest values: we are a small team and we are open to ideas that could help us to learn and to grow.

In our  early stages we can provide visibility in exchange for writing. We are open to discuss various forms of collaboration and we aim to connect contributors with one another, and with magazines, galleries, exhibition spaces, cultural centers or anyone in need of words.
